In the hall of the Universidad de Concepción's Casa del Arte is one of the country's most important works of art: the Presence of Latin America mural, by Mexican painter Jorge González Camarena.

Its history

After the great earthquake of 1960, Mexico helped rebuild the Casa del Arte and commissioned the mural. González Camarena painted it between November 1964 and April 1965: acrylic on stucco, covering about 300 square metres.

What it tells

The history, unity and brotherhood of the peoples of Latin America, in a composition full of figures, symbols and colour.

Historic Monument

In 2009 the National Monuments Council declared it a Historic Monument.

Tips

  • The Casa del Arte also has a painting gallery: add it to your visit.
  • Opening hours: check before you go.
