Volcano, forests, lakes and hot springs: a three-day plan to make the most of La Araucanía's adventure capital.

Pucón, on the shore of Lake Villarrica and at the foot of the volcano of the same name, packs adventure, nature and relaxation into a few kilometres. Here is one possible three-day plan.
Day 1: Villarrica volcano
At 2,847 metres, Villarrica is one of Chile's most active volcanoes and lies about 16 km from town. The climb to the crater is demanding, over snow and ice, and can only be done with an accredited agency, which provides the gear. If you would rather not climb, the volcano is just as striking from the lake and beaches.
Day 2: Huerquehue and the lakes
In Huerquehue National Park, the Los Lagos trail climbs through forests and waterfalls to lakes such as Chico, Verde and Lake Toro, with views of Villarrica. On the way back, stop at the Ojos del Caburgua, waterfalls with crystal-clear water.
Day 3: water and rest
In the morning, rafting on the Trancura river (with sections for different levels). In the afternoon, one of the nearby hot springs, from rustic pools to full spas. To finish, the sunset at La Poza or Playa Grande, facing the lake.
Tips
- The volcano climb depends on the weather and volcanic activity: it may be called off.
- Prices, hours and entrance fees for parks and hot springs change by season: check on arrival.
