A school donated by Mexico after the 1939 earthquake holds murals by two great Mexican artists. A Historic Monument since 2004.

The 1939 earthquake left Chillán in ruins. As a gesture of solidarity, the Mexican government donated a school, the Escuela México, opened on 25 March 1942. Through the efforts of poet Pablo Neruda, two Mexican muralists came to decorate it: David Alfaro Siqueiros and Xavier Guerrero.
The murals
- "Death to the Invader", by Siqueiros, in the second-floor library: a monumental work on the history of Chile and Mexico, painted with industrial materials.
- The murals by Xavier Guerrero in the entrance hall, painted in fresco.
Historic Monument
Since 2004 the murals have been a National Monument in the Historic Monument category.
Tips
- It is a working school: check visiting hours before you go.
- Combine it with Chillán's market and fair.
