A few hours from Temuco, Conguillío National Park shows the power of Llaima volcano (3,125 m), one of the most active in South America. Its monkey puzzle forests grow among lava fields and volcanic lagoons.

Lakes and lagoons

Lake Conguillío is the largest in the park. Laguna Arcoíris formed some 300 years ago, when an eruption of Llaima blocked a stream; the trunks of the drowned forest can still be seen underwater. The trail also skirts Laguna Captrén.

Trails

A network of trails for all levels includes Truful Truful, Los Carpinteros (with ancient monkey puzzle trees) and the demanding Sierra Nevada, with views of the lake and volcano.

Tips

  • Check road and volcano conditions before you go.
  • Some trails may require a guide or have entry times: ask at the park.
  • Bring rain gear and water.
