La Junta, at the northern tip of the Aysén Region, owes its name to the meeting of the Rosselot and Palena rivers. Long before it became a town it was a meeting point where travellers and drovers rested and stocked up. It was officially created in 1963.

A key stop

Between Chaitén and Coyhaique, it is one of the most useful stops on the Carretera Austral to refuel, eat and sleep. Roads lead from here to Lago Verde and to Raúl Marín Balmaceda, at the mouth of the Palena.

Rivers and fishing

The local rivers are famous for recreational fishing; there are also boat trips, horse rides, lookouts and nearby hot springs.

Tips

  • The fishing season has set dates and requires a licence.
  • Check the side roads, which are gravel.
