The Cajón del Maipo is the closest mountain getaway from Santiago: in less than an hour you reach the entrance to the valley, which opens up into rivers, peaks, hot springs and trails for all levels. San José de Maipo is the base town.

El Yeso reservoir

Its turquoise water, at more than 2,500 metres above sea level, is the most photographed view in the valley. You get there on route G-25 and then a dirt road; entry requires advance booking.

El Morado Natural Monument

A trail of about 3 hours leads to El Morado lagoon, with views of the San Francisco glacier. The park has strict entry times: arrive early, as hikes cannot start after midday.

More to do

  • Rafting on the Maipo river, with sections for beginners and for thrill-seekers.
  • High-altitude hot springs, such as Colina, reached by gravel road: go in a suitable vehicle or with an authorised tour.

Tips

  • In winter some roads may close because of snow: check road conditions.
  • Prices and hours for parks and hot springs change: check before you set off.
