High above Ancud, overlooking the entrance to the bay, stands Fort San Antonio, a Spanish fortification built in 1770.

The last stronghold

Chiloé was the last territory of Chile in Spanish hands. The fort surrendered on 19 January 1826: it was the last place in the country where the Spanish flag flew.

What to see

Today it is a park overlooking the bay, with bronze cannons still pointing at the harbour entrance.

Tips

  • It is a few blocks from downtown: combine it with the Ancud Regional Museum.
  • The view over the bay is especially beautiful at sunset.
