Route 5, the Pan-American Highway, runs the length of Chile, some 3,363 km from the Peruvian border, and ends in Quellón, in the south of Chiloé's main island. The end point is marked by the Hito Cero (Milestone Zero), at Punta Lapa.

The monument

It is a sacho, the traditional anchor of Chilote sailors, alongside a cross and a shrine to the Virgin. The area was renovated with a promenade, lighting, native plants and wooden benches.

A symbol

For many travellers, a photo at the Hito Cero marks the end of a journey through all of Chile. The Pan-American as a whole links the three Americas.

Tips

  • Combine the visit with Quellón's waterfront and seafood.
  • Ferries leave Quellón for the Carretera Austral: check schedules.
