Puerto Raúl Marín Balmaceda lies on Los Leones island, in the delta of the Palena river, where the river meets the inland sea. It is a landscape of transition between river, fjords, beaches and evergreen forest.

Getting there

From La Junta it is about 75 km of gravel road along the Palena, finishing with a free ferry that runs during the day.

Boat trips

From the shore or by boat you can see Chilean dolphins, sea lions, penguins, otters and many seabirds; at certain times of year, whales. The Pitipalena fjord and Las Hermanas island are classic destinations, and boats also leave from here for the southern coast of Corcovado National Park.

Tips

  • Check the ferry schedule before leaving La Junta.
  • Boat trips depend on the weather: allow a spare day.
