Tours and Activities:
Beaches and Lakeshores
Discovering places you have never been before can be a great way to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life while the sun caresses you and your mind wanders to the horizon.
The resorts near the center of Puerto Octay and the paved road that surrounds Lake Llanquihue showcase the diversity of outdoor environments where water sports, mountaineering, and hiking are practiced, especially in summer.
We decided to start our tour at La Baja resort, located on the Centinela peninsula, surrounded by traditional summer homes. It's three kilometers of gently sloping beach and calm waters are ideal for swimmingsimply relaxing. At the edge of the coast, you can still make out the site of the old Hotel Centinela, opened in 1912, which for decades was a meeting place chosen by Chilean and foreign high society for its privileged location.
From there, we followed a well-maintained trail that led us to a natural viewpoint. We climbed to the top and, from that point, were rewarded with a panoramic view of the two bays and the Osorno and Puntiagudo volcanoes. We spent a few minutes contemplating these natural wonders. Then we headed to the El Maitén resort, a favorite weekend spot for locals, where many gather to barbecue and relax in the sun. On its coastline, there is also an old chapel built by German settlers more than a century ago, which still retains its original charm.
With a little more time, we organized a drive around Lake Llanquihue on a paved road to discover mountain trails and spots for sport fishing. Nature has endowed this circuit with countless places to hike, camp, and simply sit and admire the sunset.
We set off for the ports of Fonck and Klocker, with our destination being the city of Puerto Varas. As we drove along, we came across charming, peaceful spots surrounded by natural forests with lakeside accommodation, which are very popular with Chilean tourists. In Las Cascadas, we had the opportunity to watch people enjoying water sports in an area surrounded by native species.
When we reached the base of Osorno, we noticed that the variety of excursions was endless, both in summer and winter. Mountaineering, mountain biking, climbing, and skiing are just some of the possibilities offered by the slopes of the volcano. We continued to Petrohué on the coast of Lake Todos los Santos and inside Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, a place dedicated to adventure sports in all their forms.
Following the contour of the lake, we passed through Puerto Pilar and Playa Venado, and the beaches of Niklitscheck and Hermosa. We stopped at La Poza, a tranquil spring surrounded by vegetation, with Loreley Island in the center. The calm of the place and the reflections of the forest in its waters were a perfect end to our day. Puerto Varas remained in the background, but the beauty of this stretch tempted us to stay longer.
The places we mentioned are just a few of the many that can be explored according to each person's interests. We came to understand that there is a wide range of alternatives for enjoying this lake perimeter, as its diverse landscapes captivate those who love the outdoors, and the possibilities for exploring it seem endless.
