Exclusive Yacht Club

With the Osorno, Puntiagudo, Tronador, and Calbuco volcanoes as a stunning back, Frutillar Bay brings together sailing enthusiasts who glide across the waters of Lake Llanquihue.

It is only natural that a body of water of such vast dimensions provides ideal conditions for water sports and sport fishing, making the Frutillar Yacht Club a focal point for those drawn to these activities.

We visited its facilities, where a rock-lined marina with depths of up to two meters accommodates a significant number of boats that remain in the water year-round. This detail reflects the constant nautical activity of the area. An old lighthouse crowns one side of the marina and has become a true emblem of the institution.

Within the club, the Frutillar Nautical Brotherhood carries out its mission of sports management and training through its sailing school. After years of dedication and sustained effort, its members organize regattas for different types of boats and categories, welcoming sailors of all ages and experience levels.

When we inquired about the activities, we learned that the sailing school offers qualified instructors and Olympic-class Optimist dinghies, specifically chosen for teaching children and young people thanks to their safety, maneuverability, and similarity to the handling of larger sailboats.

Members of the brotherhood, well acquainted with the local winds and navigation rhythms shaped by wave patterns, find the club to be a gathering place for conversation and camaraderie. At the same time, they promote values of mutual respect, coexistence, and care for the natural environment.

We strolled along the pier and visited its restaurant and bar, a building constructed entirely from early 20th-century wooden railway sleepers that recreates an authentic maritime atmosphere. Open year-round and to the general public, the space invites visitors to imagine winter evenings gathered around the warmth of its large fireplace.

We set sail aboard the Colono, accompanied by seagulls gliding over the bay and arriving from the sea, thanks to Frutillar’s proximity to Puerto Montt. The excursion offered a view of the Yacht Club from the water and the chance to enjoy the breeze and sunshine of a peaceful spring afternoon.

Upon our return, we were welcomed by the extensive menu at La Cofradía restaurant, featuring a ion of starters, main courses, and a comprehensive drinks list. Adjacent to the dining room and facing the pier, a comfortable lounge with large windows offers the perfect setting to enjoy a drink at the Barlovento Bar during the summer season.

Frutillar is widely known for its tranquility and vibrant cultural life. Sailing adds another dimension to the experience, inviting visitors to discover the city from a different perspective—one that blends landscape, sport, and gastronomy.
