When the River Runs

The evergreen foliage, the sequence of waterfalls and the aroma of the environment take hold of all our senses.

Petrohue River Falls - Puerto Varas

One of the classic tourist circuits near Puerto Varas leads to Pérez Rosales National Park and the Petrohue River, famous for its waterfalls boasting a strong and melodious sound.

We drove out of Puerto Varas and bordered Lake Llanquihue heading for Ensenada along the paved road. We took advantage of this ride to stop at some of the beaches, such as Niklitscheck and Hermosa, one more eye-catching than the next. After 16 kilometers, we crossed a bridge and spotted a site to our right where we could rent boats and canoes. La Poza, a water body in the middle of the rainforest featuring Loreley Island inside, may be accessed from this point.

Some kilometers ahead, we passed by Venado Beach, well-known for its fine sand. Farther on, we crossed the Pescado River, where lovers of salmon and trout fishing delighted themselves. We stopped to take a photograph of ourselves in front of a chapel made with Patagonian cypress tiles. A watermill formerly used to grind wheat stood very close to it.

Petrohue River Falls - Puerto Varas

As we slowly left the city behind, we got ready to enter a greener environment and relish the Valdivian rainforest. As we finally faced the falls, we were dazzled by the roaring waters whose dance seemed to have no end. The cascade is made up by several steps of basaltic rocks originated in the Osorno Volcano and carried by Lake Todos los Santos towards the Petrohue River.

This water course, whose volume increases in the rainy season, was completely surrounded by thick vegetation. The view is amazing and driving to this attractive spot in Chile is completely worth it.
