When the River Runs
The evergreen foliage, the sequence of waterfalls, and the scent of the air captivate the senses of those who visit the Petrohué Falls.
One of the most classic and beautiful tourist routes near Puerto Varas takes us to Pérez Rosales National Park and the Petrohué River, famous for its loud and harmonious waterfalls.
We leave Puerto Varas in our car and drive around Lake Llanquihue towards Ensenada on the paved road. We take the opportunity to stop at some of its beaches, such as Niklitscheck and Hermosa, each with its own particular charm. After 16 kilometers, as we cross a bridge, we find a detour to La Poza, a tranquil waterhole surrounded by native vegetation and with Loreley Island inside, ideal for kayakingsmall boat trips.
A few kilometers further on, we passed Playa Venado, known for its fine sand; further on, we crossed the Pescado River, where salmon and trout fishing enthusiasts were enjoying their hobby. We took the opportunity to stop at a small chapel with larch shingles and an old water mill that recalls the rural life of the first settlers.
Slowly, as we left the city behind, we prepared to enter a greener environment and enjoy the Valdivian rainforest. When we reached the waterfall area, the roar of the water greeted us with force. The waterfall is formed by a series of basalt rock steps, the result of ancient eruptions of the Osorno volcano, which channel the waters of Lake Todos los Santos into the Petrohue River.
Surrounding it, lush vegetation and natural viewpoints frame the spectacle. In the rainy season, the flow increases and the spectacle becomes even more impressive. Marked trails and walkways allow you to enjoy the tour safely, making this one of the must-see attractions in southern Chile.
The spectacle is wonderful, and it is well worth the kilometers traveled to reach this corner where nature shows itself in all its strength and beauty.
