Raft tour down the Palena River

Mónica Pons Eduardo Epifanio

We let ourselves be carried away by the river waters with the pleasant sensation of sailing as lightly as a leaf.

Rafting down the Palena River

Water is very special for those of us who like to spend time outdoors. It is a synonym for purity and it is based on simplicity. And if it is flowing, it becomes even more attractive.

From time immemorial, floating on a boat or raft has attracted both children and adults. And we feel familiar with that feeling.

When we were invited to take part in a rafting outing organized by expert guides in Alto Palena, we did not hesitate: it would be an exceptional day.

The joint of the Moro, Tigre and Palena Rivers would be the meeting point for all adventurers to get together. Two large colorful rafts waited for the instructions to start the tour while a picnic invited us to stay on the shore.

Ready to Set Sail

Roberto and Álvaro were getting everything ready for the tour and Pablo contributed by preparing the fishing gear just in case it was possible to catch some fish. The rest of us just waited for the instructions to set out. We put on our life jackets and found our positions on one end of the raft touching the surface of the freezing water coming down from the heights.

We sailed almost ten kilometers down the Palena River floating downstream. Very leisurely, we got past the landscapes and the shores. Every now and then, the guide would slightly correct the course with his paddle.

The Best Part

Afterwards, the flumes appeared on the river bends. Whenever one was coming, we would move much faster. Adrenaline was increasingly evident on our faces.

We stopped the raft at one bend for Pablo to display his fly-fishing-rod. We were all attentive to his expert skills.

“Fishing is much more amusing when there are flumes. Whether from a raft or wading through the river, the anglers just need a light gear and a good nymph or streamer” our experienced guide added.

Both rafts continued downstream up to a shelter on the left bank of the Palena, where we all got off and had a snack at the cozy cabin Jorge offers in the heart of the native forest.

A Friends’ Nook

Mate amargo and a nice chat consolidated the group. Then we learned that the activities offered by our guides are not limited to only one discipline. They are combined in such a way that the tours include river rafting, kayaking and various kinds of fishing. Furthermore, adventurers may also enjoy horseback riding and overnight stays at cabins or camping sites.

We continued downstream and were stunned to see a cascade that poured its waters into the river. The end of the tour was near and we became aware of it when we saw a group of cabins. Rincón Chico was the name of that spot, which represented the finishing line for our tour.
